Nasojugal Depression Filling

Nasojugal Depression Filling

Surgery Features

The tear trough (nasojugal groove) refers to the crescent-shaped depression at the inner side or below the eye bag, which is also the junction of the lower eye lid and facial skin.

The fat within the orbit bulges due to aging and sagging; the tear trough (nasojugal groove) is also depressed.

Tear trough (nasojugal groove) and eye bag problems are also confused. Some people misunderstand it as “dark circles” when in fact a tear trough refers to the crescent-shaped depression at the inner side or below the eye bag, which is also the junction of the lower eye lid and facial skin. Since the fat of the eyelid is much thinner than the fat in the facial skin, the boundary between the two is not obvious when the skin is young and tight. However, when the two start to differ more vastly with aging, the boundary between the two becomes more obvious, gradually forming a depression at the junction. If eye bags add to the problem, the shadow of the depression becomes even more highlighted.

Formation of Tear Trough (Nasojugal Groove)

1. Aging

2. Staying up late nights

3. Wearing glasses

4. Nose allergies, resulting in poorer local blood circulation surrounding the eyes and accelerated fat atrophy around the eyes, forming a tear trough (nasojugal groove), groove-type dark eye circles, or eye bags.

Surgical Approach

♦Fat Graft (Usually Combined with Blepharoplasty)

Bulging eye bags coupled with mid-face drooping make the depression between the eye bag and the sagging cheek even more obvious. To improve the problem, carry out “blepharoplasty combined with nasojugal depression filling”.

Transfer a part of the eye bag fat to the tear trough (nasojugal groove) when performing blepharoplasty to fill the depression, thereby improving both problems at once.

Precautions

1.Do not wear makeup or use skincare products on the day of surgery.

2.After surgery, first clean the wound using saline solution before applying ointment.

3.Do not wear contact lenses, avoid emotional agitation, raising the head too high, bowing the head, lifting heavy objects, or urinating/defecating forcefully to avoid wound swelling and bleeding.

4.Apply cold press about 15-20 minutes every hour (based on individuals’ tolerance).

5.Refrain from smoking, drinking, spicy foods, or seafood that easily leads to allergies.

6.Refrain from exercise, such as bike riding, basket, yoga, etc. within one month.

Q&A

Q:Where is the tear ditch located??

A:The tear trough (nasojugal groove refers to a depressed ditch from the side of the lower eyelid near the nose to the inner corner of the eye. It is caused by soft tissue atrophy and sagging at the lower edge of the orbit.
